Thanksgiving Progress Report – Update #2

So, I woke up at 07.00 this morning, but I didn’t get out of bed until 07.30. I took one look at the blueberry pie I made yesterday and decided to throw it out and start new. So that required a trip to the supermarket. And of course, they sold out of things in the portion sizes I needed, so I just decided to make 2 blueberry pies.

And of course, evaporated milk is nowhere to be found in Swedish supermarkets. So that nearly FUBAR’d the pumpkin pies. But I decided to use condensed milk (but it so much sweeter) and balance it out with regular milk. Pumpkin Pies saved!

So now I have 6 pies in total. If anyone wants to come over for pie tomorrow, please do. I insist. We’ll never eat 6 pies.

I finished the dressing for the turkey this morning and the brine seems to be very promising. The turkey went into the oven at noon. So that gave me time to clean the rest of the apartment, set the table prep for making baked macaroni and cheese (a last minute addition as the menu seemed a bit short), make whipped cream for the blueberry pie, and make a run for wines.

So today’s tasks:

1) Drink wine
2) Bake the homemade croutons and make the dressing for the salad I am creating
3) Pray for good outcome on turkey
4) Peel and cut pasnips, carrots, and sweet potatoes
5) Go get stuff forbaked mac & cheese
6) Get ready for guests
7) Fall asleep in my mashed potatoes at dinner!

Whee! \o/

Thanksgiving Progress Report

So, it’s the day before Thanksgiving Saturday (I celebrate on Saturday here in Sweden because it’s not recognised as a public holiday). Today’s tasks were:

1) Brine the Turkey
2) Clean the Apartment
3) Bake Desserts (pecan, blueberry, and pumpkin pies)

My grade today is a “B”
(A for Everything Done, B for Most Things Done, C for Half of it Done, D for Not Much Done, and F for Nothing Done)

Turkey is being brined as I type (will be ready at 10.30 tomorrow morning) as scheduled, the apartment is 90% clean — vacuumed, dusted, polished, and mopped. Just some re-shuffling of things I needed for today, but will not need tomorrow). The Blueberry and Pecan pies are baked. However, I forgot to purchase a key ingredient for the pumpkin pie (the evaporated milk…grrr…), so I will have to make those pies tomorrow. I also don’t like how the first blueberry pie turned out, so I will make a second one. So this puts me 45 minutes behind schedule. Luckily, I can make up for it by waking up 30 minutes earlier, and I have already peeled the potatoes for the mashed potatoes tonight (I guess they are okay to sit in water overnight as they will end up mashed anyway) as well as prepared almost everything for the turkey dressing. So that gives me back another 45 minutes.

So overall, I feel ready for tomorrow. Now for some well-deserved whiskey and a very sound sleep. 🙂

“You Are Wrong Because”

In the course of many exchanges of ideas with others, when I think that I am right, it obviously means that I think the other person is wrong. And when I think they are wrong, I often internally try and relate it back to the section called "You Are Wrong Because" in Scott Adam’s "The Joy of Work: Dilbert’s Guide to Finding Happiness at the Expense of Your Coworkers".

So I re-post that section here for your amusement and encourage you to think about these things after the next exchange of idea you have with someone else besides me! \o/

1. AMAZINGLY BAD ANALOGY

Example: You can train a dog to fetch a stick. Therefore, you can train a potato to dance.

2. FAULTY CAUSE AND EFFECT

Example: On the basis of my observations, wearing huge pants makes you fat.

3. I AM THE WORLD

Example: I don’t listen to country music. Therefore, country music is not popular.

4. IGNORING EVERYTHING SCIENCE KNOWS ABOUT THE BRAIN

Example: People choose to be obese/gay/alcoholic because they prefer the lifestyle.

5. THE FEW ARE THE SAME AS THE WHOLE

Example: Some Elbonians are animal rights activists. Some Elbonians wear fur coats. Therefore, Elbonians are hypocrites.

6. GENERALIZING FROM SELF

Example: I’m a liar. Therefore, I don’t believe what you’re saying.

7. ARGUMENT BY BIZARRE DEFINITION

Example: He’s not a criminal. He just does things that are against the law.

8. TOTAL LOGICAL DISCONNECT

Example: I enjoy pasta because my house is made of bricks.

9. JUDGING THINGS WITHOUT COMPARISON TO ALTERNATIVES

Example: I don’t invest in U.S. Treasury Bills. There’s too much risk.

10. ANYTHING YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IS EASY TO DO

Example: If you have the right tools, how hard could it be to generate nuclear fission at home?

11. IGNORANCE OF STATISTICS

Example: I’m putting ALL of my money on the lottery this week because the jackpot is so big.

12. IGNORING THE DOWNSIDE RISK

Example: I know that bugee jumping could kill me, but it’s three seconds of great fun!

13. SUBSTITUTING FAMOUS QUOTES FOR COMMON SENSE

Example: Remember, "All things come to those who wait." So don’t bother looking for a job.

14. IRRELEVANT COMPARISONS

Example: A hundred dollars is a good price for a toaster, compared to buying a Ferari.

15. CIRCULAR REASONING

Example: I’m correct because I’m smarter than you. And I must be smarter than you because I’m correct.

16. INCOMPLETENESS AS PROOF OF DEFECT

Example: Your theory of gravity doesn’t address the question of why there are no unicorns, so it must be wrong.

17. IGNORING THE ADVICE OF EXPERTS WITHOUT A GOOD REASON

Example: Sure, the experts think you shouldn’t ride a bicycle into the eye of a hurricane, but I have my own theory.

18. FOLLOWING THE ADVICE OF KNOWN IDIOTS

Example: Uncle Billy says pork makes you smarter. That’s good enough for me!

19. REACHING BIZARRE CONCLUSIONS WITHOUT ANY INFORMATION

Example: The car won’t start. I’m certain the spark plugs have been stolen by rogue clowns.

20. FAULTY PATTERN RECOGNITION

Example: His six last wives were murdered mysteriously. I hope to be wife number seven.

21. FAILURE TO RECOGNIZE WHAT’S IMPORTANT

Example: My house is on fire! Quick, call the post office and tell them to hold my mail!

22. UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT OF SUNK COSTS

Example: We’ve spent millions developing a water-powered pogo stick. We can’t stop investing now or it will all be wasted.

23. OVERAPPLICATION OF OCCAM’S RAZOR (WHICH SAYS THE SIMPLEST EXPLANATION IS USUALLY RIGHT)

Example: The simplest explanation for the moon landings is that they were hoaxes.

24. IGNORING ALL ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE

Example: I always get hives immediately after eating strawberries. But without a scientifically controlled experiment, it’s not reliable data. So I continue to eat strawberries every day, since I can’t tell if they cause hives.

25. INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOME THINGS HAVE MULTIPLE CAUSES

Example: The Beatles were popular for one reason only: They were good singers.

26. JUDGING THE WHOLE BY ONE OF ITS CHARACTERISTICS

Example: The sun causes sunburns. Therefore, the planet would be better off without the sun.

27. BLINDING FLASHES OF THE OBVIOUS

Example: If everyone had more money, we could eliminate poverty.

28. BLAMING THE TOOL

Example: I bought an encyclopedia but I’m still stupid. This encyclopedia must be defective.

29. HALLUCINATIONS OF REALITY

Example: I got my facts from a talking tree.

30. TAKING THINGS TO THEIR ILLOGICAL CONCLUSION

Example: If you let your barber cut your hair, the next thing you know he’ll be lopping off your limbs!

31. FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND WHY RULES DON’T HAVE EXCEPTIONS

Example: It should be legal to shoplift, as long as you don’t take enough to hurt the company’s earnings.

32. PROOF BY LACK OF EVIDENCE

Example: I’ve never seen you drunk, so you must be one of those Amish people.

So it’s October Already

I haven’t really written a lot since Facebook came along because that is the place where people can stay most update about me. So for those of you with Facebook and follow here, feel free to click through to my profile and friend me. So anyhow, I’m here now and in the mood to post.

Damn this year has moved rather fast. I was looking over my New Year’s Resolutions and realised that I have only accomplished 7 of the 12 things I said that I would do (one major goal a month). Which means that I am actually 3 behind. So I have some work to do. I have never before accomplished all of my resolutions so I am determined to break that losing streak.

Lately I’ve been working a lot. Actually a bit too much, but I have just figured that it is better to be busy than bored. However, consecutive 65 hour weeks is just not sustainable anymore. So I will now have a week of vacation in November. In addition, I have a few long weekends planned as well to visit some friends around Europe since I got cheap tickets. And I also have some great friends coming to visit me over the course of November. And if I keep up motivation and energy, I will use November to do some renovations to the apartment which I think will increase the value 5-10% (or at least give me a healthy tax rebate). I am planning to change the wall…right now they are stucco (I think that is the term) and I want to sand them down and paint them a neutral color. I have decided that I am going to move to a bigger apartment in November. I need a home office.

I went to see Saltimbanco (Cirque du Soleil) in September. It was an amazing show and everyone should see all of their shows! I am seriously tempted to go see Veraki in London in January. Of course if all of the finances work out. London is a bit pricey, but it is always fun! 😀

I am still thinking about an iPhone. A lot. Almost every day. I would settle for an iPod Touch, but in fact what I want is a constant data connection on my phone combined with music. Because I don’t have many personal calls, it still makes sense to use my company phone as my primary mobile (and just pay for my private calls). But because our company phones don’t have data, any phone is basically a brick with wireless. Wireless has made the phone more bearable, but nothing will replace a data plan. I need all of you to push me over the edge so that I just drop the money to get an iPhone! 😀

Anyway, besides the trip to the US (you can see the pics to get the visual story) and a lot of work, not much new to report this time around. I’ll come back in a bit with an update 😀

The Debate Over Healthcare

I have to say that I find the discussion on health care in the US to be really strange.  The argument by the conservative wing of the Democratic party and the Republicans almost lacks logic.

They complain that “the government” will make decisions on your health care.  About what care you will and won’t receive based on what is affordable or other factors.  And they really are getting up in arms about it.  However, we seem to gloss over the fact that HMOs today control most of the decisions about your health care.  They already do tell you what care you can receive based on what is affordable or other factors.  And that factor is The Profit Motive.  So I need someone to explain to me why on earth it is okay for HMOs to tell us what medical care we can and can’t have, compared to research and analysis from the government.  At least the government doesn’t have the profit motive guiding it.  Conceptually, the government would have public health as the overriding concern.

For most of the Western countries where a government plays a role in healthcare it is mostly a constructive one.  In places like Canada, United Kingdom, and Sweden, most of the populations doesn’t worry about general health conditions as they can go to a doctor without worry.  Now of course, there are situations where they are exceptions…the horror stories that prove the exception instead of the rule.  However, as a general rule, the general care is very good.  And with frequent general care, you can minimse the likelihood that you need specialist care.

Like the US justice system, we have the best health care system money can buy…for those who can afford it.

I think more important than whether the plan is a democratic or republican plan, is that if the focus is on the public health and the public good, then universal health coverage for all Americans is possible.  If healthy corporate profits is more important than public health, then of course universal health care is outside of our reach.

So The Trip to NYC Begins! :-D

So now that we are at the ½ way point to our US trip, I should provide an update.

On Friday when we got to the airport, we were greeted with the news that our flight from Stockholm to Newark/NYC was cancelled.  The cancellation happened just 5 minutes before we arrived.  So we were standing around when we met a friend (Nicklas) who told us to go over to the ticket counter and maybe get some help from them.

So I go over to the ticket counter and we are helped by a terrific woman at the counter who despite the long line and being asked by her colleagues to help someone else, spent the time to re-route us to New York via Munich and we were only 90 minutes delayed at the end of it.  That was really good luck!  She’s earned a place in our hearts for sure! 😀

So we arrived on Friday night, make it through the shitty experience that is customers and immigration, and then we get to the hotel.  It is a really nice hotel right at Times Square so we are in the center of it all!  We were so tired that we decided to eat pizza for dinner and then go out to try and find some bars.  That was an unique experience, the details of which must be shared over beers.  But needless to say, we were probably so tired that we called it an early night and decided to wait until Saturday.

On Saturday we slept in late, went shopping around the city, bought some really nice things, had an award-winning dinner (sarcasm), and then went out to a bar and a club.  We had a great time.  But the high point of Saturday was meeting my high school friend Nakia (love you girl!) and her friend Kassia!  It was good to see people in person that I have not seen in such a long time!

On Sunday we slept in late again and went up and around the city.  More siteseeing (Rockerfeller Center, etc) and looked into more stores.  Then I took Alex to Ruby Tuesdays (we started to upgrad the meals…lol…) and then we went to a club called Escolito.  I can’t say that it was really my kind of club, but Alex liked it a lot.  They were having something called American Rumble.  The singers were awesome though and that is what I will remember about it.

On Monday we decided to wake up a bit early and see the city.  We’ve long since realised that we cannot see everything when we visit cities, so it is good to invest 3-4 hours on the city siteseeing busses where you can hop on and hop off.  So we did that for most of the day on Monday.  They are great to get an overview of things you should just drive past and not visit and getting oriented for things you want to see more of on another day.  We really only have 2,5 days left so we will now be able to make the most of it.  The highlight of Monday was also to be able to see Rob (yay!) and chat and catch up!

So today we don’t have plans other than to do more siteseeing and take advantage of the day.  Tomorrow with luck we’ll see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.  And I hope we’ll be able to see my friend Derrick whilst in New York.  On Friday then it’s off for a weekend in Atlanta to have with the lovely Steve, Brent, John, Ronnie, and the gang in ATL.  Then onwards to Boston.

We have pictures even now but we’ll start posting them later on.  For the moment we just wanna have fun! 😀

Queens Day 2009 in the Netherlands

This year Alex and I went to visit friends in Delft for Queens Day. The actual day was a Thursday, but we arrived on Tuesday it was fantastic to meet Mario, Pelle, and Brian again 😀 (whom we met in Stockholm when they were here to visit in November 2008).

So below are some pictures from the journey…thanks to a Fotki widget you can see them as a slide show!

(if viewing in Facebook you might not be able to see LJ-embedded links, so the link to the pics is here:

I will also pick a few to add to my pics directly in Facebook, for those who hate leaving the Facebook system for any reason 😀

More details about the trip another time! 😀
